Brown Gravy Smothered Hamburger Steaks

Ingredients :

For the Hamburger Steaks:

  • 1 1/2 pounds ground beef
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 small onion finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil

For the Brown Gravy:

  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 small onion thinly sliced (optional)
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder optional
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder optional

Instructions :

  1. In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, breadcrumbs, milk, egg, finely chopped onion, minced garlic, Worcestershire sauce, salt, pepper, garlic powder, and onion powder. Mix until just combined.
  2. Divide the mixture into 4-6 equal portions and shape them into oval patties.
  3. Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat.
  4. Add the hamburger patties to the skillet and cook for about 4-5 minutes per side, or until they are browned and cooked through. Remove the patties from the skillet and set aside.
  5. In the same skillet, reduce the heat to medium and add the butter. Once melted, add the flour and whisk continuously for about 2 minutes to form a roux.
  6. Gradually whisk in the beef broth, making sure to scrape up any browned bits from the bottom of the skillet.
  7. Add the Worcestershire sauce, Dijon mustard, salt, pepper, and any optional seasonings (garlic powder, onion powder).
  8. If using, add the thinly sliced onion and cook until the onion is softened and the gravy has thickened, about 5-7 minutes.
  9. Return the cooked hamburger steaks to the skillet, nestling them into the gravy.
  10. Spoon some gravy over the tops of the steaks.
  11. Reduce the heat to low and let the steaks simmer in the gravy for about 10 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld together.
  12. Serve the brown gravy smothered hamburger steaks hot, with the gravy spooned over the top
  13. Pair with mashed potatoes, rice, or steamed vegetables for a complete meal.
