Ingredients

  • 1½ pounds ground beef (80/20 preferred)
  • 1 large egg
  • ½ cup milk
  • ½ cup crushed saltine crackers (or plain breadcrumbs)
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • ½ teaspoon onion powder (optional)
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder (optional)
  • 2 tablespoons oil (or halal-approved fat)
  • 2 large yellow onions, thinly sliced
  • 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups beef broth (or water with beef bouillon as a halal alternative)

Instructions

  • Mix the Meat Gently: In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, egg, milk, crushed crackers, Worcestershire sauce, salt, pepper, and any optional seasonings. Mix gently just until combined.
  • Shape Into Large Patties: Divide the meat into 4 to 6 portions. Shape into ¾-inch thick patties, ensuring sealed edges.
  • Sear in a Hot Skillet: Heat oil in a cast-iron skillet over medium-high heat. Sear patties 4-5 minutes per side until browned. Remove and set aside.
  • Cook the Onions: Reduce heat to medium. Add onions to the skillet and cook 8-10 minutes until caramelized. Sprinkle flour, stir, and cook 1-2 minutes. Add broth, stirring until thickened. Return patties, ladle gravy over, and simmer until fully cooked (3-5 minutes).

Notes

For a juicier result, use 80/20 ground beef. Substitute halal beef broth for a more intense flavor. Serve with mashed potatoes or rice.
