Ingredients

  • 2½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tbsp orange zest (freshly grated)
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • ½ tsp baking soda
  • ½ tsp salt
  • ¾ cup unsalted butter, softened (for dough)
  • 1 egg
  • 2 tbsp fresh orange juice
  • ½ tsp vanilla extract
  • ½ tsp orange extract
  • ½ cup sour cream
  • ½ cup unsalted butter, softened (for frosting)
  • 2 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract (for frosting)
  • ½ tsp orange extract (for frosting)
  • 2 tbsp fresh orange juice (for frosting)
  • 1-2 tbsp heavy cream (for frosting)
  • Orange food coloring (optional)

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Line baking tray with parchment paper.
  • Whisk flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt in medium bowl.
  • Beat softened butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy (3-4 minutes).
  • Add egg, orange zest, orange juice, vanilla, and orange extracts. Mix well.
  • Incorporate sour cream into dough mixture.
  • Gradually mix dry ingredients into wet until smooth.
  • Chill dough 15 minutes. Scoop 1½-inch balls. Place 2 inches apart on tray.
  • Bake for 10-12 minutes until edges are golden.
  • Cool completely.
  • Beat frosting butter, powdered sugar, vanilla, orange extract, and orange juice until creamy.
  • Add heavy cream if needed for texture.
  • Pipe frosting onto cooled cookies. Add orange zest for garnish.

Notes

Use all-butter or salted butter? Be sure to have zest ready early.
Optional: Add pinch of orange food coloring for vibrant hue.
Store in airtight container up to 5 days.
Cookie dough can be refrigerated 1 hour before baking for improved flavor.
