Ingredients

  • 1 cup warm milk (110°F)
  • 2 1/4 tsp active dry yeast
  • 2 tbsp sugar
  • 4 tbsp unsalted butter (melted), plus 2 tbsp for brushing
  • 3 to 3 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 large egg (room temperature)
  • 2 cups sharp cheddar cheese (shredded)
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder (optional for brushing)

Instructions

  • Activate the yeast: Combine warm milk, sugar, and yeast. Let sit 5-10 minutes until frothy.
  • Mix wet ingredients: Add melted butter, egg, and salt to the yeast mixture. Stir to combine.
  • Add flour: Gradually add 2 cups flour, mixing until soft dough forms. Add 1/2 cup more flour until dough is manageable.
  • Knead dough: On floured surface, knead 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  • First rise: Place in greased bowl, cover, and let rise 1 hour in warm spot.
  • Shape rolls: Punch down dough. Divide into 12 equal pieces. Roll into balls, place on baking sheet.
  • Second rise: Cover and let rise 30 minutes.
  • Brush butter: Mix 2 tbsp melted butter with garlic powder (if using). Brush over rolls.
  • Bake: At 400°F (200°C) for 20-25 minutes until golden and cooked through.

Notes

For a stronger cheese flavor, use extra-sharp cheddar.
If dough is too sticky, add flour 2 tbsp at a time.
Let rolls cool slightly before serving to avoid melty mess on the crust.
