Ingredients

  • 1 cup warm milk (around 110°F)
  • 2¼ teaspoons active dry yeast
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
  • 3 to 3½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 large egg, at room temperature
  • 2 cups sharp cheddar cheese, shredded
  • 2 tablespoons melted butter (for brushing)
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder

Instructions

  • In a large bowl, combine warm milk, sugar, and yeast. Stir gently and let sit 5-10 minutes until frothy.
  • Add melted butter, egg, salt, and 2 cups flour. Mix until batter forms.
  • Gradually add remaining flour until dough is soft and workable.
  • Knead dough 5-7 minutes on a floured surface until smooth and elastic.
  • Grease a bowl, place dough inside, cover, and let rise 1 hour in a warm spot until doubled.
  • Punch down dough, roll out into 12x18-inch rectangle, and sprinkle with shredded cheddar.
  • Roll dough tightly into a log, tuck seams under, and slice into 12 equal rounds.
  • Place each on a baking sheet, let rise 15 minutes, brush tops with melted butter and garlic powder, then bake until golden.

Notes

Ensure cheese is vegetarian-friendly (check for animal rennet)
For a halal option, use garlic-infused oil instead of brushed butter
Store cooled rolls in an airtight container for up to 3 days
Reheat in oven for crispiness
