Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 2 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened applesauce
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 2 large apples, diced
  • Vegetable oil, for frying (about 2 inches deep)
  • 3 cups powdered sugar
  • 1/3 cup milk
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract

Instructions

  • Mix dry ingredients: In a large bowl, stir together all-purpose flour, granulated sugar, baking powder, salt, and ground cinnamon until evenly combined.
  • Add wet ingredients: Pour in unsweetened applesauce and milk. Mix gently until the batter is just combined, avoiding overmixing.
  • Fold in apples: Carefully fold diced apples into the batter for an even distribution.
  • Heat the oil: In a deep skillet, heat 2 inches of vegetable oil to 375°F (190°C) using a thermometer.
  • Fry the fritters: Scoop 1/3 cup batter into hot oil, flatten slightly, and fry 2-3 minutes per side until golden brown. Work in batches to avoid overcrowding.
  • Drain and cool: Use a slotted spoon to lift fritters onto a wire rack over a baking sheet to drain.
  • Make the glaze: Whisk powdered sugar, 1/3 cup milk, and vanilla extract until smooth. Glaze fritters while warm.

Notes

Use tart apples like Granny Smith for a balanced flavor.
Ensure oil temperature stays consistent by avoiding temperature drops after adding batter.
Store in an airtight container for up to 2 days or freeze unglazed fritters for longer storage.
For added texture, toss fritters in cinnamon sugar before serving.
