Tortilla Burgers (Smash Burger Tacos)

Ingredients:

For the Burger Tacos

  • 1 lb (450 g) ground beef (80/20 for best juiciness)
  • 6 small flour tortillas (soft taco size)
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder (optional)

For the Toppings

  • 6 slices American or cheddar cheese
  • Shredded lettuce
  • Diced tomatoes
  • Sliced pickles
  • Thinly sliced onion

Optional Burger Sauce

  • 1/3 cup mayonnaise
  • 2 tablespoons ketchup
  • 1 tablespoon mustard
  • 1 tablespoon finely chopped pickles or relish

Instructions:

  1. Divide the ground beef into 6 equal portions and roll lightly into balls.
  2. Place one beef ball in the center of each tortilla. Sprinkle evenly with salt, pepper, and garlic powder if using.
  3. Using your hand or a spatula, press the beef firmly into a thin, even layer that reaches close to the tortilla edges.
  4. Heat a large skillet or griddle over medium-high heat. Place tortillas beef-side down into the hot pan.
  5. Cook for 3–4 minutes until the beef is deeply browned and crispy.
  6. Flip the tortillas, top each with a slice of cheese, and cook for 1–2 minutes more until the tortilla is lightly toasted and the cheese melts.
  7. Remove from heat and add desired toppings. Fold like a taco or serve flat.

Serving Tips

  • Serve immediately while the beef is crispy and the tortilla is warm.
  • Pair with fries, potato wedges, or a simple slaw.
  • These are best eaten fresh and hot straight from the pan.

Variations

  • Add sautéed onions or mushrooms directly onto the beef while cooking.
  • Use spicy mayo or chipotle sauce for extra kick.
  • Swap flour tortillas for low-carb or whole wheat tortillas if desired.
