Sparkling Twisted Christmas Wreath Cookies

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 ½ tsp vanilla extract
  • ½ tsp almond extract (optional)
  • 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • ¼ tsp salt
  • Red sanding sugar
  • Green sanding sugar
  • Gold sanding sugar
  • White granulated sugar
  • Silver or gold dragees / micro nonpareils

Instructions:

  1. Beat softened butter and powdered sugar until smooth and creamy.
  2. Add the egg, vanilla, and almond extract; mix to combine.
  3. Whisk together flour, baking powder, and salt, then mix into the butter mixture on low until a soft dough forms.
  4. Wrap and chill the dough for 20–30 minutes.
  5. Prepare bowls of red, green, gold sanding sugar, and granulated sugar.
  6. Scoop 1 tbsp dough, roll into a 6-inch rope, then cut in half.
  7. Roll one half in a sanding sugar color of your choice.
  8. Twist the colored rope with the plain rope and form a wreath; press ends to seal.
  9. Lightly roll edges in granulated sugar and add dragees on top.
  10. Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 8–10 minutes, keeping the tops pale. Cool completely.
