Southern-Style Stewed Potatoes

Ingredients :

  • 7 medium potatoes, peeled and diced
  • 2 tablespoons (30 ml) butter
  • 1 tablespoon dried onion flakes (or ½ small onion, finely chopped)
  • 1/2 tablespoon all-purpose flour (for thickening)
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1/2 cup water (plus more for boiling)
  • Salt and black pepper, to taste
  • Optional: 2 tablespoons bacon grease, for extra flavor

Instructions :

  1. Prep the potatoes: Peel and dice the potatoes into even-sized chunks so they cook evenly. Add them to a large pot and cover with water—about 2 inches above the potatoes.
  2. Cook the potatoes: Bring the water to a boil, then reduce the heat and simmer until the potatoes are fork-tender but not falling apart. This usually takes about 10–12 minutes.
  3. Make the thickener: In a small bowl, whisk together the flour and 1/2 cup of water until smooth. This will help thicken the stew without lumps.
  4. Combine and simmer: Once the potatoes are soft, reduce the heat to low. Slowly pour in the flour mixture while stirring gently and continuously. Let it simmer for 5–7 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the liquid thickens slightly.
  5. Add flavor: Stir in the milk, onion flakes (or fresh onion), and butter. Season with salt and pepper to taste. If using, add bacon grease for a rich, smoky flavor.
  6. Final touch: Let the stew simmer for another 5–10 minutes so the flavors meld and the broth thickens to your liking. Stir occasionally and taste to adjust seasoning if needed.
  7. Serve warm: Dish it up in bowls and serve with warm cornbread, collard greens, or a crisp side salad for a full Southern-style spread.
