Southern-Style Hamburger Steak (Classic Comfort Food)

Ingredients:

For the Hamburger Steaks

  • 1½ pounds ground beef (80/20 works best)
  • ¼ cup bread crumbs
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt and black pepper, to taste
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil or butter, for frying

For the Onion Gravy

  • 1 large onion, thinly sliced
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt and black pepper, to taste

Instructions:

  1. In a large bowl, combine ground beef, bread crumbs, garlic powder, onion powder, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and black pepper. Mix gently until just combined.
  2. Divide the mixture into 4 equal portions and shape into oval patties.
  3. Heat olive oil or butter in a large skillet over medium heat.
  4. Add the hamburger steaks and cook for 4–5 minutes per side until browned. Remove from skillet and set aside.
  5. In the same skillet, add sliced onions and cook for 5–7 minutes until softened and lightly caramelized.
  6. Sprinkle flour over the onions and stir well. Cook for 1 minute to remove the raw flour taste.
  7. Slowly whisk in beef broth and Worcestershire sauce. Bring to a gentle simmer, stirring until the gravy thickens.
  8. Return the hamburger steaks to the skillet. Spoon gravy over the top.
  9. Reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer for 10–12 minutes until the patties are cooked through.
  10. Taste and adjust seasoning if needed. Serve hot.
