Homemade Saltine Crackers

Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour (plus extra for dusting)
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • ½ tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp salt (plus extra for sprinkling)
  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter (cold, cut into cubes)
  • ⅔ cup warm water (adjust as needed)
  • 1 tbsp vegetable oil or olive oil
  • Clarified butter, for brushing

Optional toppings:

  • Flaky sea salt
  • Sesame seeds
  • Poppy seeds
  • Cracked black pepper

Method :

  1. Mix Dry Ingredients: In a large bowl, combine flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  2. Add Butter: Rub the cold butter into the flour until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  3. Add Water: Gradually add warm water, mixing until a soft dough forms. Knead gently for 3–5 minutes until smooth.
  4. Rest Dough: Cover with a damp towel and rest for 20–30 minutes.
  5. Roll and Cut: Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C). Roll the dough very thin (about ⅛ inch). Cut into squares or rectangles and prick each piece with a fork.
  6. Season and Bake: Place crackers on a parchment-lined baking sheet. Brush with clarified butter or oil and sprinkle with salt or toppings.
  7. Bake: Bake 10–12 minutes or until golden brown and crisp.
  8. Cool: Let cool completely before serving or storing in an airtight container.
