Hoe Cake

Ingredients

  • 2 cups self-rising flour

  • 1 cup milk

  • ½ cup vegetable oil

  • 1 tsp salt

  • 2 tbsp butter (for greasing & brushing)

Instructions :

1. Prep the Oven

Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C).

2. Mix the Batter

In a large bowl, stir together:

  • Self-rising flour

  • Milk

  • Vegetable oil

  • Salt
    Mix gently using a wooden spoon. Don’t overmix.

3. Prepare the Skillet

  • Grease a 10-inch cast iron skillet generously with butter or bacon grease.

  • Pour the batter into the skillet.

  • Use a pastry brush to lightly brush melted butter over the top.

4. Bake

  • Bake for 18–20 minutes, or until golden and set.

  • If the top isn’t browned, switch the oven to broil for 1–2 minutes to toast the top.

5. Cool & Serve

  • Let it cool in the skillet for 10–15 minutes before slicing and serving.

  • Best served warm with butter, honey, or alongside soups and stews.
