Grandmother’s Buttermilk

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup yellow cornmeal
  • ¾ cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1 ½ teaspoons baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon baking soda
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 egg
  • 3 tablespoons vegetable oil or melted butter

Instructions:

  1. Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C). Grease a 9-inch square pan or cast-iron skillet.
  2. In a large bowl, mix cornmeal, flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  3. In another bowl, whisk together buttermilk, egg, and oil (or butter).
  4. Add wet mixture to dry ingredients and stir gently until just combined.
  5. Pour batter into the prepared pan.
  6. Bake for 20–25 minutes, until golden on top and a toothpick comes out clean.
  7. Let cool slightly, then slice and serve warm.

Serving Tip: Perfect alongside soups, stews, or chili.
