French Onion Soup Burgers

Ingredients:

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 2 large onions, thinly sliced
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1/2 cup beef broth
  • 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon fresh thyme leaves (or 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme)
    Salt and pepper to taste
  • 4 slices of Gruyère or Swiss cheese
  • 4 hamburger buns
  • 1 clove garlic, minced (optional for garlic butter buns)
    Additional butter for buns

Directions:

  1. 1. Caramelize Onions:

    • Melt butter in skillet over med-low.

    • Thinly slice onions with mandoline. Cook with sugar 20-25 mins until golden.

    • Deglaze with broth and Worcestershire; stir in thyme.

    2. Form & Cook Burgers:

    • Mix ground beef with salt, pepper, 1 tbsp Worcestershire. Press into patties.

    • Sear in skillet 4-5 mins/side (135°F for medium).

    3. Toast Buns:

    • Mix garlic + 2 tbsp butter. Brush on brioche buns; toast until golden.

    4. Assemble & Broil:

  • Place patties on baking tray. Top with onions + Gruyère.
  • Broil 2 mins until cheese bubbles.
  • Sprinkle thyme; sandwich in buns.
