Flag Cake

Ingredients:

For the cake

  • 1 box white cake mix (prepared according to package instructions, with eggs, oil, and water as listed)
  • For the topping and decoration
  • 1 container (16 oz) whipped topping, thawed
  • 2 half-pints fresh blueberries
  • 2 cups fresh strawberries, hulled and sliced
  • Powdered sugar, for dusting (optional)

Directions:

  1. Preheat your oven according to the cake mix instructions. Prepare the white cake batter as directed, then pour it into a greased 9×13-inch pan.
  2. Bake the cake as instructed, typically for 30 to 35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Let it cool completely to room temperature.
  3. Once cooled, spread half of the whipped topping evenly over the top of the cake.
  4. In the upper-left corner of the cake, place blueberries tightly together to form the “stars” section of the flag.
  5. Starting at the top of the remaining space, arrange five rows of strawberry slices in horizontal lines to form red stripes.
  6. Use a piping bag or plastic bag with the tip cut off to pipe the remaining whipped topping between the strawberry rows, creating four white stripes.
  7. Optional: Lightly dust the top of the cake with powdered sugar for an elegant finish.
  8. Serve immediately, or chill for up to an hour before serving for cleaner slicing.
