Ingredients:
For the cake
- 1 box white cake mix (prepared according to package instructions, with eggs, oil, and water as listed)
- For the topping and decoration
- 1 container (16 oz) whipped topping, thawed
- 2 half-pints fresh blueberries
- 2 cups fresh strawberries, hulled and sliced
- Powdered sugar, for dusting (optional)
Directions:
- Preheat your oven according to the cake mix instructions. Prepare the white cake batter as directed, then pour it into a greased 9×13-inch pan.
- Bake the cake as instructed, typically for 30 to 35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Let it cool completely to room temperature.
- Once cooled, spread half of the whipped topping evenly over the top of the cake.
- In the upper-left corner of the cake, place blueberries tightly together to form the “stars” section of the flag.
- Starting at the top of the remaining space, arrange five rows of strawberry slices in horizontal lines to form red stripes.
- Use a piping bag or plastic bag with the tip cut off to pipe the remaining whipped topping between the strawberry rows, creating four white stripes.
- Optional: Lightly dust the top of the cake with powdered sugar for an elegant finish.
- Serve immediately, or chill for up to an hour before serving for cleaner slicing.
