The Best Homemade Biscuits

Ingredients :

  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 3 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 4 teaspoons baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon cream of tartar (optional, for extra lift)
  • ¾ cup cold unsalted butter, cut into small pieces
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 cup whole milk (or buttermilk for richer flavor)

Instructions :

  1. Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, salt, baking powder, and cream of tartar.
  3. Add the cold butter pieces and cut them into the flour using a pastry cutter or your fingers until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  4. In a small bowl, beat the egg and milk together, then pour into the flour mixture. Stir just until combined—don’t overmix.
  5. Turn the dough onto a lightly floured surface and gently knead it 4–5 times. Pat or roll it to about 1-inch thickness.
  6. Use a biscuit cutter or a glass to cut out rounds and place them on the prepared baking sheet.
  7. Bake for 12–15 minutes, or until the tops are golden brown. Serve warm with butter, honey, or jam.
