Tacos and Indian Fry Bread

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ¾ cup cold water
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
  • Oil for frying

Instructions:

  1. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt.
  2. Add the cold water and 1 tablespoon vegetable oil. Stir until a soft dough forms.
  3. Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead gently for 2–3 minutes, until smooth.
  4. Divide the dough into 6–8 equal portions and shape each into a ball.
  5. Flatten each ball into a thin round, about 6 inches wide.
  6. Heat about 1 inch of oil in a deep skillet over medium heat.
  7. Fry each piece of dough for 1–2 minutes per side, until puffed and golden brown.
  8. Remove and drain on paper towels.

Serving Ideas

  • Top with taco meat, shredded lettuce, cheese, tomatoes, and salsa for fry bread tacos.
  • Serve warm with honey or powdered sugar for a sweet version.

Tips

  • Keep the oil at a steady temperature so the bread cooks through without burning.
  • Fry bread is best served fresh but can be kept warm in a low oven for short periods.
